Endangered mussels find surprising foothold in Kalamazoo County creek - MLive

VICKSBURG, MI — When a population of snuffbox mussels, listed on the U.S. endangered species list, was found in a creek next to a $80 million development in progress, people took note.

Researchers are now working on a plan to help the fragile species survive and thrive there.

Snuffbox mussels, shell-dwelling creatures that filter water, can’t move too far by themselves. They rely on catching fish to spread glochidia that will later turn into juvenile mussels.
